During the plot of Watchmen there is one very key agent in the text and sub-text and that would be the political angle. The rising political tension between the US and the Soviet Union is climaxing the height of nuclear annihilation of the Cold War in 1985
. The book shows fifth presidential term winner Richard Nixon rather than Reagan guiding and negotiating trying to workout a strategy! Top level government leader's are just as nervous as it's citizens feeling the increasing presence of armageddon and the end is high now more than ever. Military maps shows nuclear devastation of fall out shelters and the entire Northeast of the US obliterated. Another constant reminder to the minute is the nuclear alarm clock clicking closer and closer to midnight which will be WW III and a world wide nuclea
r holocaust. The Watchmen or those that are still alive are now active back in action and join in a race against time to save New York and the world from armageddon! On a lighter hand of the political stage of the world the past international wars worked well in the US's favor for a change in the '70's. The US having a walking A-Bomb Dr. Manhattan was able to turn around the entire Vietnam War in America's favor winning the war in a few months. This proved to be a true victory later on after the war Vietnam became the 51 US state! America due to the abilities of Dr. Manhattan was able to restate and once again secure that it is the world's lone superpower and a fearful and powerful force to be reckon with.
